Leeds United vs Manchester United Prediction: Back the Under at Elland Road

Updated October 16, 2026

Updated October 16, 2026

Manchester United’s week has been about everything except football. Lisandro Martinez criticized the club’s hierarchy after Tuesday’s 2-0 loss at Atletico Madrid, apologized twice, and looks unlikely to start at Elland Road on Sunday. United are winless in five and still haven’t won away in the league this season.
Prediction markets have installed Leeds as 42¢ favorites, and while I won’t argue with that, there is little value in it. Instead there is value to be found in the goals market. The match prices point to a game with around two and a half goals, yet Over 2.5 trades at 58¢. Leeds games have averaged 2.17 goals, and Daniel Farke’s side concede less than a goal per game.
Our model sees a 6% edge on Under 2.5 Goals at 43¢.

ATS Expert Verdict

“The match market is priced for a tight game and the totals market is priced for an open one. I trust the tight version. Leeds sit deep, hold 44% of the ball and rely on set pieces, while United have no No. 9 to finish what they create. At 43¢, the under is the best price on the board.”
Leeds keep games tight
Leeds concede 0.8 goals per game, the joint-fewest in the league, with two clean sheets from six. They don’t push numbers forward either. Leeds average 44.3% possession (17th), have 115 touches in the opposition box (17th) and land 3.8 shots on target per game (16th). 46.7% of their shots came from set pieces in the first five games, the highest share in the league. Fewer than half their games’ worth of chances come from open play, so these matches stay low on volume.
United create volume, not goals
United lead the league with 205 touches in the opposition box and have 10.7 xG, fifth-best. But they’ve scored nine and missed 11 big chances, while 4.87 xG of that sky high figure was created at home to Ipswich. Benjamin Sesko is still out, so there’s no specialist in the box to finish those chances. They also traveled back from Madrid on Wednesday after a game in which they failed to score and lost Yoro to a red card. A tired, unsettled side that can’t finish doesn’t usually produce a high-scoring game away from home.

United’s numbers are better than their results. They’re fifth for xG and seventh for xG conceded, which looks like a top-half side. The problem is finishing. Eleven big chances missed from 16 created is a poor rate, and it’s hard to see that improving without Sesko.
Leeds have the opposite profile. Their xG of 8.3 ranks 14th, and they’ve let opponents create 8.8 xG while conceding only five. Some of that will even out. That’s partly why the model sits at 49% rather than higher. Even if Leeds concede more, their attack doesn’t produce enough to turn this into a shootout.
Farke’s 3-4-2-1 has barely changed in weeks. Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka screen a back three of Justin, Elvedi and Muharemovic, with Ampadu and Tanaka in front. Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson provide the width from wing-back.
Leeds don’t need much of the ball. They sit in a compact block, win it back, and look for Dominic Calvert-Lewin early. He has three goals from 3.1 xG, but he’s also missed four big chances, the most in the squad. Anton Stach and Noah Okafor play behind him, with Stach the main creator. Leeds’ biggest threat is dead balls. With Calvert-Lewin, Ampadu and the back three all strong in the air, every corner is a chance.
Michael Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 builds patiently through Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo, then works the ball to Bryan Mbeumo in the channels. Bruno Fernandes is moved around depending on the game, and he played on the right in Madrid.
Without Sesko, Matheus Cunha leads the line, but he drops deep to create rather than attacking the box. That’s how United end up with so many touches in the area and so few clear chances.
The bigger issue is at the back. Martinez is unlikely to play, Luke Shaw is a doubt, and Patrick Dorgu is out, so United could be without three of their first-choice defenders on the left side. Against a Leeds side that relies on set pieces, United’s aerial defending matters more than their possession.
